Tree ID: The Mighty Oaks

That’s right, it’s a late summer tree ID hike, with a focus on demystifying the mighty oaks! Participants will be taking a look at the trees of JMF and learning the tools to differentiate the more than 15(!) different species of oak present in our forest. All levels of arboreal and botanical wisdom are welcome (though the target will be those who have less experience)! This is a guided hike. Wilderness Louisville Forest Adventure Campout

Join JMF staff for a family-friendly fall exploration and campout at Jefferson Memorial Forest. The event is held near the Forest’s Environmental Education Center and offers a wide variety of activities showcasing all the Forest has to offer. Afternoon activities include archery, climbing wall, guided hikes, pumpkin decorating, hay rides, and nature play. Nighttime activities include spooky hike, stargazing, and s’mores by the bonfire. Program meets in the Horine Reservation. FEE for camping: $25 platform tent or $15 field, festival-style camping. All ages. A parent/legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18. Owl Prowl

Will owls respond if they’re called? Whooooo knows! Join Natural Areas staff for an owl prowl that will begin indoors with a presentation about these amazing nocturnal predators, their habitats, and behaviors. The evening continues with a hike along well-traveled paths as we call out for these elusive birds. Test your auditory skills by listening for their responses. Dress for the weather and choose clothing that doesn’t make noise when you move. You may bring a flashlight or headlamp, however, it MUST be a red light to protect every­one’s night vision. Program will meet in the Horine Reservation at the Horine Conference Center. 12408 Holsclaw Hill Rd. on Google Maps. Park in the large gravel lot and walk down the drive to the conference center. Winter Hike in the Woods

Are you going stir crazy like us?! Winter is the best time for hiking. Winter hiking means no bugs, no humidity, and better views! Hiking in colder temperatures even burns more calories! What’s not to love?! Join JMF staff for a hike on the 3.5 mile Red Trail Shortcut loop. This loop is an easy to moderate hike. The beginning and end offer easy walking along the ridge tops. The middle section includes a trip down from the ridge into a creek bed and back up to the next ridge. There is 330 ft. of elevation change. Come on out for a fun morning of exercise and some learning about the winter woods. Dress in layers and bring a water bottle. Spring Wildflower Hike

The wildflowers are blooming! See these elusive spring beauties before they’re gone! Join us for a wildflower hike in Scott’s Gap where will explore the hillsides and creek banks searching for the flowers that only show themselves this time of year. This will be an easy to moderate out and back hike on uneven terrain with a couple of small creek crossings. Dusk Tree Hike (Tree Week Event)

Come explore the Horine Reservation trees at Jefferson Memorial Forest on a dusk hike with volunteer Brian Whitehouse. Participants will get a chance to learn more about the crepuscular creatures that utilize trees as their home in the forest! Hike will be no more than 1.5 miles and on easy terrain. Forest Adventure Campout

Join us for fall color and outdoor fun at Jefferson Memorial Forest during the Forest Adventure Campout, presented by Wilderness Louisville on Saturday, October 21st, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Explore the forest, show off your costume, and sleep under the stars! Activities include archery, guided hikes, a climbing wall, pumpkin decorating, hayrides, and more! This event is free and open to the public. There will be a food truck and West Sixth on site. Families are encouraged to pitch a tent and stay overnight. $25 will reserve one of the Forest’s family campsites and for $15, campers can set up in the field in the Horine Reservation. This year, Forest Adventure Campout will serve as an outdoor gear donation site. Have gently used gear you no longer need? Donate at the event and receive a free program voucher for a JMF program. Gear Donation Guidelines • As a general rule, only donate items that you would give to a close friend or family member. • Items must be in good condition and functioning properly (working zippers, no dog or cat hair, clean and no holes or tears — check pockets). • We do not accept any team/ball sports or motorized sports equipment or “everyday” clothing (like sweatpants, leggings, and hoodies) We accept: • Outdoor Clothing for Kids and Adults: Rain jackets, snow coats, hiking pants, thermal layers, flannels, hiking gloves, socks, sun/rain/winter hats; all-season outdoor branded clothing • Outdoor Footwear: Hiking boots, climbing shoes, trail running shoes, snow boots • Camping Gear: Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, hiking packs, headlamps, camp stoves and cooking equipment (must be demonstrated in working condition) • Outdoor Gadgets/Accessories: sunglasses, binoculars, compasses, pocketknives, multi-tools • Fishing Gear: Waders, poles, vests, etc. • Children’s Exploration Tools: hand lenses, bug hotels, etc.

Family Birding at Shawnee with Raptor Rehab

Come meet and learn about Raptor Rehab’s beautiful birds of prey! Afterward, we will go out and practice birding. Hopefully, we can spot some raptors in the wild! Enter a magical, hidden world in the Forest, where creatures of the imagination live. Bring your children on an enchanted hike in search of forest fairies living among the wildflowers and trees. Join us for a hike for young beginners who are curious about trees. A program for explorers who want to see and learn trees. Individuals will have their own tree journal where they can take as many cool notes as they want while on a hike. You will also have the opportunity to do leaf and bark rubbings to really see what a tree looks and feels like.
